Who we are and our impact
Patient Advocate Foundation provides financial assistance to help patients afford treatment and cost of living needs, personalized case management to navigate complex healthcare and social needs challenges, and a wide array of resources to empower people to take charge of their health. Since our founding in 1996—and joining forces with the PAN Foundation in 2026—we have helped 3.8 million patients navigate and access care, granted over $7 billion in financial assistance, served 350,000 people through personalized case management and elevated the patient’s voice to drive improvements in the healthcare system.

Uniting to expand patient access to care nationwide
Patient Advocate Foundation and the PAN Foundation announced a strategic merger in March 2026, creating the most comprehensive nonprofit in the United States dedicated to helping patients navigate, access, and afford care. Patient Advocate Foundation’s TotalAssist program is a direct result of the two organizations coming together on behalf of patients and combining resources.
Rising out-of-pocket costs for Americans, shifting policies, and a thinning safety net have placed millions of people at risk of delaying or forgoing care. Together, we expand access to care and strengthen the resources available to patients.

TotalAssist is comprehensive patient financial assistance
Patient Advocate Foundation’s TotalAssist is the nation’s largest and most comprehensive charitable patient assistance program.
With more 150 disease-specific and health equity funds, TotalAssist supports patients across a wide range of serious and chronic conditions, including cancers, rare diseases, and chronic illnesses.
Our direct-to-individual grants cover eligible patient out-of-pocket costs, including copays, coinsurance, and deductibles; health insurance premiums; office visit charges the day of treatment; and administration charges related to treatment. TotalAssist does not limit how grants can be used. TotalAssist allows patients to apply their grant toward multiple eligible healthcare expenses, helping reduce gaps in care.
